Salman Khan, aka Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, is one among the four Khans (the other tree bing Aamir, Shah Rukh and Saif) who have rulied Bollywood since the '90s. With almost two decades of work behind him, he is still one of the fittest actors in Bollywood with a dedicated fan following.

Often known as Bollywood's Bad boy, his knack of walking into trouble has overshadowed people's perception of him as an actor. He may have been featured as the bad guy of the industry several times over. But many-a-common-man claims that this macho hunk has a heart made of pure gold.

He is also known for his off-screen escapades - his tortuous relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai (who is now married to actor Abhishek Bachchan), his shooting of a rare deer species, his drunk driving that led to a man’s death. However, he is also a man with his heart in the right place – he is supposed to be part of many charities for the underprivileged and the downtrodden. He has his own charitable organization, Being Human Foundation. He frequently visits sick children in hospitals and often goes to donate blood.

Though he made his acting debut with Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), his first commercial success was with the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). It won him the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. He went on to star in some of Bollywood's most successful films, such as Saajan (1991), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Biwi No.1 (1999).

In 1999, Khan won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his extended appearance in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Since then, he has starred in several critical and commercial successes, including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Tere Naam (2003), No Entry (2005) and Partner (2007).

Often known as Bollywood's Bad boy, his knack of walking into trouble has overshadowed people's perception of him as an actor. He may have been featured as the bad guy of the industry several times over. But many-a-common-man claims that this macho hunk has a heart made of pure gold.

Khan starred in three films throughout 2008, all of which underperformed, though his second film of the year, Heroes, received some positive reviews from critics. Salman hosted the second season of 10 Ka Dum in 2009 which turned out to be more successful than his first season.

Khan's first film of 2009, Wanted directed by choreographer turned director Prabhu Deva was declared a smash hit. The action film turned out to be a huge success. With his first film for 2010 Veer, Salman debuts as a writer and the film has garnered much attention even before it released.

An established actor, he was arrested and briefly jailed for allegedly shooting a rare black antelope near Jodhpur in 1998. He was also arrested by the police for his connections with the underworld. Son of Salim Khan (who scripted the all-time-blockbuster film Sholay with Javed Akhtar), Salman has a penchant for fitness – he exercises daily and cycles his way to work. He was voted 7th best-looking man in the world by People Magazine.

Salman had a well publicised affair with Aishwarya Rai that lasted only two years. His endless tantrums traumatised her enough to give a press conference in 2003 that she would never work with him again for personal reasons. Salman was also accused in yet another press conference the same year by Vivek Oberoi to have called the latter 41 times during one night and threatened him with death for his affair with Aishwarya Rai.

The brother of Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Alvira Khan and Arpita Khan, his early fitness trainees included Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan. Model turned actress Malaika Arora is his sister-in-law while actor-turned-director Atul Agnihotri is his brother-in-law.

Salman was an excellent swimmer in his school days and was even tipped for representing the country one day. In his early days as a struggling actor, Salman never used his father's name and influence. He used to visit producers on his own and audition for roles. Today, he has a mannequin of himself in Madam Tussaud's Museum (England) along with heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

Quotes :

The media wanted me to talk about my close friends and family. Why should I? I am in no position to talk about my family life which I intend to keep private. Even my friends would not appreciate being spoken about in the media by me

(About his court trial): The court can hang me. I am tired of such lengthy proceedings.

(On the difference between Hollywood and Bollywood): No difference, except that I had to wake up early in the morning. And I had to say my dialogue in English in front of the camera.

I still don't have any real interest in painting. I haven't spoken about it either. I paint for my foundation... to sell my work for charity. I can't ask anyone to support or praise my paintings. I'm not a beggar. Tomorrow even if I have nothing at all, I'll do something or the other, but I won't beg.

You know the story of Gautam Buddha? He's walking down the road and one person spits on him every day. Buddha remains calm and one day the man realises his mistake and starts following Buddha. The only person I have hurt is myself.

For me, acting comes straight from the heart. In that sense I don't act at all. I think that to feel the character's pain, I have to be myself. Somewhere audiences see that.

(On his childhood problems and his father's second marriage to Helen): It was very difficult in the beginning, when everybody was talking about it. My mother just couldn't take it. I can get caught in many things but there is one thing I will never get caught in, and that is acting - because I don't act. On screen, I am like I am in real life.
