Reviews - Chance Pe Dance
This week Chance Pe Dance opens at theatres. People are expected to throng the theatres to get a glimpse of Shahid Kapoor’s eight-pack abs. But, I guess that’s the only appealing thing that would drag crowds to cinema halls as the story of the movie is a very hackneyed one.
Plot
Sameer (Shahid Kapoor) wants to become a big star. But, the man is penniless and to survive in the city takes up various jobs. He does not have even enough money for food. Eventually he is thrown out of his rental home by the landlord.
Sameer starts living in his car. Meanwhile his lady love Tina (Genelia D’Souza) who is a choreographer is like a ray of sunshine in his life. With her help he starts to regain hope.
While training kids in a school he also pursues a reality TV show which was initiated by a director who had ditched him of the hero’s role in his flick.
What Worked
Sameer lives in a one room apartment that is way too large to fit into any struggler’s budget but the rest of it rings true – he practices his expressions, does his pull-ups, has bread toasted under an iron with the last scraps of butter and then heads out to conquer the world with his unfailing optimism and charm. This is the best part of the film.
What Didn't
The scenes of struggle don’t touch you because Shahid is in star mode from the first frame. His hair is nicely messy; his biceps have just the right definition and his T-Shirts are Ed Hardy, even though a character in the film explains that they are all knock-offs. Despite the daily rejections, Samir shows no vulnerability or rawness.
The dance sequences in the film are lively but they are undermined by Adnan Sami’s absolutely uninspired music. This is a dance film without one memorable dance track.
But the biggest let-down is the script. It meanders and stumbles along bewilderingly.
Performances
Both Genelia and Shahid try squeezing in as many expressions as they can into each scene to compensate for the lack of a coherent script. Is Genelia really needed in the film? You will be asking yourself that after watching the movie.
Overall, Chance Pe Dance isn’t the hot weekend ticket you were waiting for. Not Recommended.
