Movie Review :
The pattern in films written by Imtiaz Ali is clear. Appealing locations, ill-fated love stories, characters with distinct traits and music you can take home.
Cocktail is no different. From hip cinematography to very believable performances and peppy music, Cocktail has it all.
Plot
Boy loves girl. Boy ends up falling in love with girl’s best friend. Best friend also loves boy. But best friend sacrifices boy for girl. You get the drift?
Meera (Diana Penty) is stranded in London after her husband Kunal (Randeep Hooda) refuses to take her home. Her knight in shining armour turns out to be the party-animal-drunk-out-of-her-wits Veronica (Deepika Padukone). Veronica takes Meera home and allows her to live with her.
Soon, Veronica hooks up with serial-dater-and-womanizer Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) and the three start living in together. Initially, Meera cannot stand the sight of Gautam but manages to bear him as he is her best friend’s boyfriend. When Gautam’s mother (Dimple Kapadia) lands up at their door, he puts up a show of Meera being his girlfriend (rather than the boisterous Veronica of whom his mother would definitely disapprove). Gautam’s mother immediately approves of the shy, homely Meera and has great plans for their wedding back in India.
Forced to hang out together, Gautam and Meera start liking each other and sparks fly between them. On cue, Veronica decides that she loves Gautam and wants to spend the rest of her life with him.
Where does this love triangle go from here? Does Kunal re-enter Meera’s life? The rest of the movie plays out the answers.
Performances
Homi Adjania’s direction is impeccable, with Deepika Padukone the jewel in his crown. Her character is complex and she displays just enough maturity while portraying it. Finally, one has a reason to say she can act. Diana Penty is awkward, just like Meera. She reminds one of Nargis Fakhri in Ali’s last, Rockstar, only a little better. Saif Ali Khan “oozes charm” as he plays catch-up with much younger leading ladies. After a point you start feeling sorry for Gautam, sandwiched between friendship, love and all that jazz that makes living difficult. Boman Irani as Gautam’s Mama with a colourful past and Dimple Kapadia as his loud-mouth, conservative Delhi mother add their bits to make this concoction enjoyable.
Overall
Cocktail has just the right mix of fizz and flavour to allow the occasional and inevitable crinkles of triteness to flow well below the surface. It is definitely worth a visit to the multiplex.
Music Review :
What makes 'Tumhi Ho' - different then any usual Pritam-Neeraj song, is the female lead, Kavita Seth. Add the sticky tune and the loop inspired by age old chant, 'Tumhi ho bandhu, sakha tumhi', this is one is a helluva track. Starting off with familiar guitar strings, Benny and Shalmali makes addictive mix of 'Daaru Desi'. Rock version of Yaariyaan, makes you fall for it instantly. Be it for the lyrics by Irshad, or the fab vocals of Mohan & (late, yet superb entry of) Shilpa Rao. The track totally absorbs you. So, is the reprise of the song, sung by Sunidhi and Arijit. Interesting swap of singers in this version compared to earlier.
There is another track where lyrics are a highlight - Luttna. Sung by Masuma Anwar, Sahir Ali and Anupam Amod, its an innovative mix of sounds and wonderful words fused with fantastic vocals. During the second interlude, it takes interesting turn. Second Hand Jawani, is a glitch though.Despite of fun lyrics, it fails mostly cause of the false arrangements. And, there - we have two Coke Studio connections. First one being the singer Javed Bashir, accompanied by Nikhil and Shefali in Tera Naam Japdi Firaan. The powerful vocals does make this pop'ish track a 'stuck in head' one. Lastly, Arif Lohar's Jugni which featured in Coke Studio Pakistan, gets re-arranged by Pritam here. Though not much changes in terms of tune, the female voice is changed to Harshdeep Kaur, and that's where I am complaining. Barring that, it still makes a worth inclusion in the album.
All in all, Pritam is on a roll this year, churning out hits and more hits. There is surely something about Saif's 'mushy' movies and Pritam - together, they both work perfect.
