Noted novelist and veteran writer Aabid Surti has sued the makers of Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? Surti, who has alleged that the film has been completely lifted from his Gujarati novel Bauter Varas No Babo, has filed a case with The Film Writers Association (FWA) and has demanded Rs 1.15 crore as compensation.
A source close to the 75-year-old writer said, "Aabid Surti was shocked when he learnt about Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? When he saw the film, he realised that it was directly lifted from his novel Bauter Varas No Babo, which was later translated in Hindi as Bahatar Saal Ka Baccha. His book was a bestseller and there have been 10 editions of the novel.
Aabid was further shocked to learn that the filmmakers mentioned that the film is inspired from Sharad Joshi's short story by the same name Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? Aabid gave the FWA a copy of Sharad Joshi's short story and also of his novel.
He asked them to read his novel and see the film and then decide for themselves. When Aabid learnt that an entertainment channel has brought the satellite rights of the film, he also sent a notice to them. Aabid is waiting for the FWA's decision."
Producer of Atithi ….. Kumar Mangat said, "Yes, the said writer has gone to the FWA claiming that my film's script has been stolen from his novel. We have not even read the novel, which apparently is 35 years old. When a film is successful, people from all corners claim that it's their script. We have sent the agreement to the FWA.
“We also sent the necessary documents to prove that our film is based on Sharad Joshi's short story. It is an original screenplay by Ashwini Dheer and the FWA will soon decide” he concluded.
